Ariel Mitchell

Ariel Mitchell was named a New Musical Inc. 2017 New Voices Project Finalist and has been featured in several developmental opportunities such as the 2018 Apples and Oranges Arts THEatre ACCELERATOR, The Dramatists Guild 2017 Baltimore Footlights Reading Series, 2016 Artist Beit Midrash Group, Prospect Theater Company’s Fall 2015 Musical Theatre Lab, and The Catwalk Residency Program.

Ariel began her writing career in her sophomore year of high school with "Mask Club" (book, lyrics, and some music), a musical about high school students choosing and changing their identities like masks. She earned her BA in Playwriting (Music minor) April 2013 from Brigham Young University and her MFA in Musical Theatre Writing May 2015 from the Tisch School at New York University. She has written several plays including: "Give Me Moonlight," a play inspired by Scotty's Castle in Death Valley and most recently produced by Rapid Lemon Productions; "The Shower Principle," a two person led experiment in parenthood; and "A Second Birth," a play about an afghan girl who was raised as a boy, for which she was awarded the KCACTF Harold and Mimi Steinberg 2013 National Student Playwriting Award, third place for the 2013 David Mark Cohen Award, the 2011 Vera Hinckley Mayhew Award, a publication with Samuel French, and a production with THML Theatre Company in 2019. 

 

As well as writing, she has also dramaturged many productions including "To Kill a Mockingbird" (Resident Ensemble Players, University of Delaware), "The Completely Fictional — Utterly True — Strange Final Tale of Edgar Allan Poe" (Centerstage, Baltimore), "Steel Magnolias" (Echo Theatre, Provo, Utah), "What the Bellhop Saw" (Utah Repertory Theater, Murray, Utah), and "Selections from Gone Missing and The Cleverest Thief," a devised piece (Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah).

She now lives in Waukesha, Wisconsin where she enjoys planning for the future with her husband and acting as storyteller to her two young inquisitive sons.
